I bring you all warm greetings from Uganda!
I take the pleasure to share with you the progress of Michael Ortner Foundation!
We look forward to having the Foundation registered by the end of this year.
And we are sure that by January, all necessary arrangements for the launch of the Foundation shall be fully in place.
However, I call for technical support in this infancy stage of this foundation.
I know that starting a grass-root community focused Organization as well as Multinational focused depends on the Foundation laid from the start; the core values leading to establishment of an excellent Organization behavior.
All this depends on the exposure, the global network base and the relations developed with other Initiatives/Organizations and experienced personnel in the field.
I am determined to have all this work out, to lay a ground for a family Foundation working under Philanthropy sector that can stand generations to come under the family posterity.

SWEDEN TRIP ENDED IN VAIN
I could not wait to be in Sweden for the 5th Global YES Summit, but it ended on Tuesday when i admitted that I had to wait to be there!
This was a great opportunity for me to get grounded in the global issues affecting the youth in this generation.
Tallberg and YES Inc. are credited for their efforts towards tackling the issues of youth empowerment especially econmically through Reworking the world.
I congratulate the Youth Worldwide for their determination to Rework the world and their representation of home commuities in this summit.
I believe this has contributed to global linkages among us to work together to REWORK THE WORLD.

MY TESTIMONY-BOOKS CHANGE LIFE (KABAALE Vincent Paul)
The sun rises from the East and sets in the West. I could hear my elder school going cousins sing this in a song with Alphabetical letters. I was a small fat boy with a great brain capable of driving a toy car and strong enough to carry my baby doll, while mum.
I was raised up in a small Catholic parish where mum worked as a Chef and supervising other 3 workers in kitchen work and other necessary parish duties. I recall every morning waking up and running to Fr. Michael Ortner’s door, greet and wait to be driven around the compound carrying timber from one corner to another. I could see big friends go and return from school, that many times I could as well join them in class, but leave any time I wanted to leave.
Later, I joined a good Nursery School far from home, more of a Boarding school under the care of a sister to mum’s friend. She was rich that every weekend she lost a tooth to the dentist, I recall every Sunday being driven around Jinja town.
She run this small Nursery school under her daughter. It was a small school but with magnificent children play materials. My exposure got so improved from this Nursery school and I can testify that my life today has been partly built from the exposure I got from this Nursery school.
At this school, I recall playing with toys, a Heavy truck every break time in our play room where all sorts of playing toys were stationed and organized.
I then joined primary, another private school which had collaborations with a school in Canada. This connection was so life changing that we used to write letters to our friends in Canada, but few pupils were always given their replies. However, that school could send my school all kinds of books and reading cards for beginners.
The school embraced me and utilized my potential, I was a sharp smart boy playing every game and involved in all activities at school, a Prefect and every morning I could come early to school and open the school premises. I could then look through the book shelf in the Head-Mistress’ office, pick a good picture fiction book and begin to read interesting pages.
We had no School Library, but we had a Central Library which could be accessed by both Pupils and teachers from the Central location; Head Teacher’s office. I cannot boast of reading many books as friends used to do, but those I managed to read shaped my life. My excellent performance was rewarded when I got transferred to a Boarding School which had a Library equipped with books-Kamuli Boys Boarding School. This School had majority of children from rich families from within and outside the Country. I utilized the Library books and attained a First Grade, joined the best School in Eastern Uganda- Kiira College Butiki, that has a partner Hampton School in England.
While at this school, I was able to have personal copies of some of the books I needed for my academic excellence. And we had a spectacular ICT Resource Center building completed in 2005. I recall before joining this school, I just used too hear about computers and wondering whether a day would come for me to stop just watching them in movies and pictures. But God answered my prayer that at this College, was introduced to Basic Computing.
However, I did not have interest in the beginning because the kids from families where they have computers always controlled the key Boards and mouse. The greatest opportunity for me to gain interest in learning how to operate computers came when Internet satellite was introduced and asked each one student to open up an email address. Every time I had personal reading time and free time after classes; in the evening, I could go to the lab, register and access a Computer to surf the Internet.
When I learnt how to conduct research on the Internet, I raised the standard and begun to travel to Jinja town, 30 Km from school to access a computer café to surf and access myself to global development opportunities.
I have cherished development issues and I recall subscribing to the Development Magazine website to begin receiving these free magazines published by DFID-Uk. While in secondary school, I opened up my Private Postal Box in Jinja to begin receiving my mails, than through school. The first item I received was this development Magazine, wherein I read about the MDGs, and the strategy to eliminate poverty by 2015. I received a DVD with a magazine about how aid is used in the developing countries and these materials have shaped my life.
I am so centered on contributing to global community development because I been in Environment where such opportunities have been available; the opportunity to study with children from rich families in the same school. Many of them have always made jokes in reality; “Vincent, I we would not be friends if it was not for who you truly are. You are a focused fellow and this leaves me with no option but to be a friend.”
Having been raised up by my grandma and under a Guardian sponsorship, MHM Rev.Fr.Michael Ortner, I have maneuvered through all circumstances and today, I testify while at University joining my 3rd year in law School this September, 2010.The exposure I have got through access to literature and various reading materials contributed greatly to keeping me focused.
But amidst my growing up, I have witnessed and still do witness the way fellow sisters, the community mothers of this generation have their education dreams shattered by early pregnancies and early marriages; some of which marriages are forced by their parents as early as between 15&19yrs.
It does really pain me in that how would one expect such a mother to effectively care for her family and educate her children. I have seen majority of them break up even before a year ends and have the baby from her parents’ house.
Parents especially in the rural areas have not had the opportunities to afford availing education basics for their children, yet in Urban areas they have had given the nature of the Environment. The greatest %tage of school drop-out is in rural areas; due to lack of attention from parents and school authorities. Children are frustrated by poor performances and little exposure and choose to leave/abandon school.
And this is as well reflected in the National Exam results where the best performing schools are Urban based and majority of failures registered are rural based schools; more of which are free/Universal Primary and Free/Universal Secondary Education where not even teaching materials are un available.
Teachers use the note books they used in study colleges and got from the pupils/students they have taught previously and use those to teach. They are not addressed to new developments in the education system; to new study subject materials.
Personally, having grown up in such community settings and aware of the Global Fight and endeavors to have the MDGs achieved by 2015, the youth globally especially in developing world need great assistance.
Children out here need to be accessed to opportunities where they embrace Education and be Role Models for the generations to come.
Africa has been known for a poor reading culture. But shall we allow this to continue? And can honestly Millennium Development Goals be achieved when Africa and other developing worlds have a challenge of Education; when reading culture is poor? And if it’s achieved by 2015, do we believe this will last long when we have over 1.5bn youth in the developing world considering the challenges of youth in this Generation especially out here? With the developments in technology, shall the entire developing world (local Communities) benefit from this technology unless generous people come up to partner and have it brought nearer to people?
I testify that there are many new districts in Uganda currently which have not more than 5 Schools having a Computer set in school. I recall in 2006/7, DFID-UK launched a School/Institution Partnership program to link UK Schools/Institutions to those in the Developing World, few of rural schools are aware of such opportunities. The opportunities of Fair trade using the Internet to market farm produce; farming community development associations, Youth Initiatives are out here missing on great opportunities due to ignorance/computer illiteracy and lack of access to such learning opportunities.
THE GREAT NEED IS IN DEMAND TO BRING SUCH SERVICES AND OPPORTUNITIES DIRECTLY TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES; to Establish Community Libraries for school going children which shall improve grades of rural schools. This will also reduce the number of early school drop outs since children shall have reading materials to compete favorably and attain excellent results.
And to Establish Community ICTs alongside the Library to conduct Basic Computing Services/training-targeting; Community Development Initiatives/Groups-Women Initiatives, Farmers’ Associations, Community Local Leaders, School Administrative staffs, Schools Students Leadership Bodies/Prefects Seminars in Computing.
I do have the communities at heart and I hope you have enjoyed reading my testimonial.
